1.Air pollution levels at "20 year-low" NASA

Air pollution over northern Indian has plummeted to a 20 year low for this time if 2020, according to satellite data published by NASA.
The data published with maps show aerosol optical depth in 2020 compared to the average for 2016-2019. Aerosol optical depth is a measure of how light is absorbed or reflected by airborne particles as it travels through the atmosphere.



2. English Language day

English language day is a united nations observance that people celebrate on April 23 each year.
The day aims to entertain and inform people about the history, culture and achievements associated with the language. The UN first celebrated English language day on April 23, 2010. English is one of the two working languages of the UN Secretariat.



3. TCS to power Israel's 1st fully Digital Bank

Tata Consultancy Services will launch Israel's first fully digital Bank. TCS was selected by Israel's Minister of Finance to transform its banking sector by building a banking service bureau that would serve as a shared. Plug and play, digital banking operations platform. This initiative is seen as a bid to boost competition in the financial services sector and enhance customer experience.



4. Epidemic Disease Act, 1897 to be amended

President Ram Nath Kovind has given assent for the promulgation of the ordinance to amend the Epidemic disease Act, 1897 to protect the health care service personnel. The ordinance provides for making acts of violence cognizable and non-bailable offences and for compensation for injury to health care service personnel.

5. Iran put the first military satellite into orbit

Iran has successfully launched the country's first military satellite in orbit. The satellite "Noor", or "Light" was orbiting 425 km(264 miles) above the earth's surface. Qased or Messenger carrier was used to launch Noor. The three-stage Qased satellite launcher uses a combination of solid and liquid fuels.



6. Global Press Freedom Index: India at 142nd 

India has dropped two places on a Global Press Freedom index to be ranked 142nd out of 180 countries in the annual reporters without borders analysis.
Norway is ranked first in the Index for the fourth year running.
China at 177th position is just three places above North Korea, which is a 180th. Pakistan dropped three places to 145, and Bangladesh dropped one place to 151.



7. Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank e-launches VidyaDaan 2.0

On April 22, 2020, The Union Human Resource Development Minister, Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’ e-launched VidyaDaan 2.0 program on DIKSHA platform to invite e-learning content contributions, Minister of State for Human Resource Development Sanjay Dhotre also participated through video conferencing in New Delhi.



8. DRDO developed a mobile laboratory to test COVID-19 samples

On April 23, 2020, Defense Minister Shri Rajnath Singh inaugurated Mobile Virology Research and Diagnostics Laboratory (MVRDL) via video conference. The lab was developed by DRDO (Defence Research and Development Organisation) in association with ESIC (Employees’ State Insurance Corporation) Hospital, Hyderabad and Private industry. This mobile lab has the testing capacity of more than 1000 to 2000 samples daily.



9. Lockdown Learners” series launched with students & educators in India on COVID-19: UNODC

On April 18, 2020, The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crimes (UNODC) under its flagship Education for Justice Initiative launched the “Lockdown Learners” series of online dialogues with students and educators in India on COVID-19 & its impact on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), peace and the rule of law.


10. India’s GDP growth likely to grow at 1.5% in the current FY: CII

On April 23, 2020, The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) in a paper- A plan for economic recovery has stated that India’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth is likely to grow at 1.5% in the current Financial Year (FY) post the lockdown period & also has suggested urgent  fiscal interventions.
