1.One Nation One Ration scheme update

 5 more states and UT - Bihar, UP, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh and Daman and Diu -- have been integrated with One Nation - One Ration Card System.

. Under the 'one nation, one ration card' initiative, eligible beneficiaries would be able to avail their entitled food grains under the National Food Security Act (NFSA) from any fail-place shop in the country.

. The scheme was announced in June 2019.



2.Kovilpatti Kadalai mittai got GI tag

. Kovilpatti Kadalai mittai - - peanut candy from the southern part of Tamil Nadu, has been granted the Geographical Indication (GI) tag.

. Kovilpatti Kadalai mittai was originally prepared during village festivals using palm jaggery and groundnuts from nearby districts.

. A large number of workers are engaged in making the candy in Kovilpatti and nearby regions.



3.PM to attend a virtual summit

 PM Narendra Modi participated in the virtual summit of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) held on 4 May 2020 to enhance coordination of the member states in their fight against the coronavirus pandemic.

. President Ilham Aliya of Azerbaijan is the current chair of the movement.

. This is the first time that the Indian PM has attended a NAM summit-level meeting after taking office in 2014.



4.Silver Lake to invest in Reliance Jio

Silver Lake will invest Rs 5,655.75 crore in Jio Platforms for a 1.15% stake at an equity value of Rs 4.90 lakh crore.

. Jio Platforms is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Reliance Industries Limited focussed on next-generation technologies.

. Reliance Jio Infocomm, which provides connectivity platform to over 388 million subscribers, will continue to be a wholly-owned subsidiary of Jio Platforms.



5.NMCG & NIUA organised IDEAthon

. The National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) under the Ministry of Jal Shakti and National Institute of Urban Affairs (NIUA) organized an IDEAthon on "The future of River Management" on 1 May 2020.

It was organized to explore how the COVID-19 crisis can shape River Management strategies for the future.

. The international webinar brought together close to 500 participants.



6. IIT Hyderabad to collaborate with Hong Kong firm to create venture ecosystem 


On May 3, 2020, The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Hyderabad, collaborated with New Frontier Capital Management, a financial firm based in Hong Kong with offices in Tokyo & Singapore, to establish a global network of ventures as well as to create a venture ecosystem.



7. Russia to launch its 1st satellite Arktika-M to monitor Arctic climate & environment 


Russia will launch its 1st Arktika-M satellite by December 9, 2020, to monitor the Arctic climate and environment. It will be launched from Baikonur space centre (Kazakhstan) using a Soyuz-2.1b carrier rocket with a freegate booster. This announcement was made by General Director of Lavochkin aerospace company of Russia, Vladimir Kolmykov on May 04, 2020.
The 2nd Arktika-M satellite is still under development and will be launched in 2023.



8. FINA postpones 2021 Fukuoka Aquatics world championships to May 2022


On 4th May, following the postponement of 2020 Tokyo Olympics to 2021 the governing body of swimming Federation Internationale de Natation (FINA) has postponed the 2021 aquatics world championships, Fukuoka, Japan to May 12 to May 29 of 2022 due to the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic.



9. Dr Harsh Vardhan Launches "COVID-KATHA"


On May 3, 2020, Dr. Harsh Vardhan, Union Minister of Science & Technology, Health & Family Welfare and Earth Sciences, launched “COVID KATHA- A Multimedia Guide for Mass Awareness”, a multimedia guide on COVID-19 on the occasion of the 50th DST (Department of Science and Technology) Foundation Day. The Golden Jubilee Celebrations were also launched, initiating myriad activities in different parts of the country throughout the year.




10. Judicial Member, Lokpal of India, Justice Ajay Kumar Tripathi passed away at 62


On May 2, 2020, Lokpal member Justice Ajay Kumar Tripathi passed away at the age of 62 in AIIMS (All India Institutes of Medical Sciences), New Delhi due to COVID- 19 (Coronavirus). He was born on November 12, 1957.
